Carlsbad, the seat of Eddy County, is nestled in
the southeast corner of New Mexico on the Pecos
River near Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The Pecos River travels 900 miles
south into Texas where it joins with the legendary
Rio Grande River.
  

As you pass through the Chihuahuan Desert and Guadalupe Mountains of southeastern New Mexico and west Texas, you would likely never guess there are more than 300 known caves beneath its surface. Carlsbad Caverns National Park boasts 113 of these caves, and has some of the largest caves in North America.
   
The Riverwalk Recreation Center is one of the city's beach areas and most inviting indoor facilities. The Lake Carlsbad Recreation Area is 125+ acres along the Pecos River. It is used for picnics, water sports and fishing and boating. Also in this area is the Carlsbad band shell where annual events are held like the Relay for Life, Art-A-Far, United Way Community Day, Hawgfest, Chili Cook-Off and the July 4th Fireworks Display, to name a few.
